Huge congratulations to Private Steven Carr, McKee Barracks Camp Staff, for taking the Gold in the European (IBJJF) Jiu Jitsu Open Championships in Lisbon, Portugal. A Blue Belt in Jiu Jitsu, Private Carr saw off tough competition in the Masters 4: Blue Belt Lightweight division. Having joined the Army in 1990 and with previous deployments in Lebanon and Kosovo, Private Carr is a relatively recent addition to the sport, starting Ju Jitsu in 2012 at the age of 44. Initial curiosity lead to a passion, with Private Carr dropping from 106 kilos to 76, the weight he currently fights at with BJJ Revolution, under the tutelage of Ex-Trooper Andy Ryan.

“There are not many guys fighting at my age and weight in Ireland, so I usually have to drop into younger age categories that put me at a distinct disadvantage, but improve my technique and fitness. That is probably what stood me in good stead fighting internationally. For those considering sport and fitness, there is no excuse not to get involved. It is never too late.”

Our congrats to Steven on his hard fought victory and we wish him all the best for competitions, long into the future.
